Week 7, Term 4

Room 1

Welcome to week 7 of term 4.  This week Walton started School.

This week we learnt about evaporation.  It is a big word to say!  It is part of the water cycle, where the sun heats up the water, turns it into teeny tiny particles that we can't see and it moves up into the sky to form clouds.  We became scientists again and did an experiment to see how evaporation worked.

First we poured some water onto the concrete and drew around it.

Then we went back later lunch to see if the water was still there.  It wasn't!  It had evaporated into the sky and the concrete was dry.  It was pretty cool.

We then watched a movie about the water cycle and learnt that it keeps going around and around and around.  Once the water is in the clouds it builds up.  The clouds get too heavy and then it rains and the water comes back to the ground.  The sun can then heat it up again and it goes back up to the sky.  Amazing stuff huh!

That's all for this week, guess what...It'll be summer next week!

Week 6, Term 4

Room 1

Welcome to week 6 of term 4.  This week Presely started School, and Charli came back from Australia!

On Thursday we had our cross country.  We had been training for it for two weeks, and finally the day came.  It was sunny and a bit windy but we were still excited to run.  Check out the photos.

Here come the boys!

And the girls!

Bailey came second out of all the 5 year old boys, good job Bailey!

Then Whaea Barb decided that some parents and teachers needed to run too, so their race was next!

That's all for this week, have a good weekend.

Week 5, Term 4

Room 1

Welcome to week 5 of term 4.

On Thursday the Kowhai team went to the Zoo, to see how animals stay safe in the sun.  It was a rainy morning but we still set off, very excited to go on the big bus to see all the animals.  First we had a quick meeting in the hall to find out what the plan for the day was.

Next stop, the bus!

After a long bus ride on the motorway we finally reached the Zoo.

First stop, morning tea at the Rotunda, fingers crossed it wouldn't start raining again.

We got to talk to a special Zoo educator who told us all about the Tigers.  He had a real Tiger jawbone and claws that we could look at.

Next we went into a classroom and had a look at some different animal objects.  There was lots to look at and touch too.

Now it was time to explore the Zoo.  First up we saw the Giraffes, Zebras and Ostrich.

Guess what, we got to feed the Giraffe!  Look at his big tongue.

Check out this cool animal, the Rhinoceros.  How do you think they keep safe from the sun?

Look at these cool pink birds, they are called Flamingos.  See how they stand on one leg?  They have very good balance!

Unfortunately the Elephant was out of her enclosure going for a walk, so we moved onto the Lions, they were all resting.  See how one is sleeping under the tree to keep out of the sun (or the rain!)

Next to the Lions were the Cheetahs.  We got very close to them, they were beautiful.  Cheetahs are one of Miss Rushbrook's favourite animals.

Now for some underwater fun.  The Seals put on quite a show for us and kept swimming past us .  It was very cool to see.

We couldn't find any real Penguins, but Rico saw this huge pretend one!

Soon it was time for us to meet back with the rest of the Kowhai team and head back to School.  We saw lots of different animals at the Zoo.  Even though it was a bit rainy we still had an AWESOME day.  Be sure to ask any of us about all the other animals we saw too.

Week 4, Term 4

Room 1

Welcome to week 4 of term 4.  This week Savanah, KC, Richard, Cathedral and Ilaisaane started School.

Have you heard the story about Maui, and how he slowed the sun?  We read this story and  created some artwork of the sun using the colours and patterns from the book.

Caleb's dad even drew us an amazing picture of the sun.

Here are some of our stories about Maui.

See you next week, its an exciting week - we are off to the Zoo!

Week 3, Term 4

Room 1

Welcome to week 3 of term 4.  This week Caleb and Dehztanee started School.

This week we got to be scientists again.  This time we looked at green plants.  We want to see what the sun does to the leaves.  We put the plants in different paces in room 1, and will check on them every few days to see if anything has happened.

This plant is by the window where there is a lot of sun.

This one is in the shade, so it gets a little bit of sun.

The third plant is in the cupboard where it gets no sun.

We will let you know what happens to our plants!  Hopefully the rain stops soon and we can have a lot of sun again.

See you next week.
