Week 5, Term 4

Room 1

Welcome to week 5 of term 4.

On Thursday the Kowhai team went to the Zoo, to see how animals stay safe in the sun.  It was a rainy morning but we still set off, very excited to go on the big bus to see all the animals.  First we had a quick meeting in the hall to find out what the plan for the day was.

Next stop, the bus!

After a long bus ride on the motorway we finally reached the Zoo.

First stop, morning tea at the Rotunda, fingers crossed it wouldn't start raining again.

We got to talk to a special Zoo educator who told us all about the Tigers.  He had a real Tiger jawbone and claws that we could look at.

Next we went into a classroom and had a look at some different animal objects.  There was lots to look at and touch too.

Now it was time to explore the Zoo.  First up we saw the Giraffes, Zebras and Ostrich.

Guess what, we got to feed the Giraffe!  Look at his big tongue.

Check out this cool animal, the Rhinoceros.  How do you think they keep safe from the sun?

Look at these cool pink birds, they are called Flamingos.  See how they stand on one leg?  They have very good balance!

Unfortunately the Elephant was out of her enclosure going for a walk, so we moved onto the Lions, they were all resting.  See how one is sleeping under the tree to keep out of the sun (or the rain!)

Next to the Lions were the Cheetahs.  We got very close to them, they were beautiful.  Cheetahs are one of Miss Rushbrook's favourite animals.

Now for some underwater fun.  The Seals put on quite a show for us and kept swimming past us .  It was very cool to see.

We couldn't find any real Penguins, but Rico saw this huge pretend one!

Soon it was time for us to meet back with the rest of the Kowhai team and head back to School.  We saw lots of different animals at the Zoo.  Even though it was a bit rainy we still had an AWESOME day.  Be sure to ask any of us about all the other animals we saw too.

  1. Hi Room 1, we thought you were very lucky to go to the zoo and see all those animals!
We wish we could feed the giraffe too!
We were worried that you might get eaten by the cheetah! Then we saw the thick glass that was protecting you, whew, then we knew you were safe.

  2. Thanks for sharing these great photo's and story of your trip to the zoo. I am sure you all had so much fun with many discussions about how animals are sun smart. Erin Liava'a (Caleb's mum)
